Patrick O'Callaghan and Associates’ annual survey of Canada’s 300 largest public companies, Corporate Board Governance and Director Compensation in Canada, published in partnership with Korn/Ferry International, studies the composition of boards in terms of the gender of directors. When we began reporting on this statistic in 1994 women held just 6% of directorships and more than half of the companies had no women directors on their boards. Since then, while the number of women on corporate boards in the US and many European countries has markedly improved, Canada’s statistics have changed very little.
Determined to find a way to address this lack of progress, Patrick O’Callaghan and Associates partnered with Richard Ivey School of Business in 2006 on an initiative to promote the nomination of women to corporate boards in Canada. The result of this collaboration is the Women on Board™ Mentoring Program – which connects board chairs and CEOs from leading Canadian companies with talented senior executive women who want to serve as corporate directors.
